Thanks to its chemical structure, ozone is able to be highly reactive with other molecules, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This attribute of ozone is what makes it effective in doing its job as a purifier and deodorizer in the industry. However, this is also why it is a double-edged sword, as it threatens the well-being of both people and pets when used in environments containing their presence.

Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) state that even in low concentrations, ozone can be harmful to people. When an individual is exposed to this substance, they might experience chest pain, coughing, throat irritation, and other respiratory issues. To be effective as a deodorizer or as a bactericide, ozone must be used in concentrations levels that are much higher than levels considered safe for humans and animals. Thus, it is not advisable to use ozone in the presence of people and pets.

However, regardless of the known implications of ozone exposure, we can still see some air purifiers in the market that use ozone. Usually, they are utilized with UVC light, which also produces ozone in low concentrations. What did this lead to? Regulatory actions were implemented, removing particular products from the market because of their property of producing ozone at unsafe levels.
